Shopify Plus vs Shopify: when the upgrade is actually worth it
The Shopify Plus vs Shopify decision usually comes up for one of three reasons: the checkout won't do something you need, wholesale is becoming a real part of the business, or an agency has suggested it. All three can be valid — but Plus starts at around ten times the price of a standard plan, so it is worth knowing exactly what changes before you sign.
What's the difference between Shopify and Shopify Plus?
Same core platform. Plus is the enterprise tier: it removes limits that standard plans have, unlocks deeper checkout and backend customization, adds B2B and multi-store tools, and comes with priority support [1]. You are not switching platforms — you are lifting a set of ceilings.
How much does Shopify Plus cost?
Shopify's public pricing lists the Basic plan from $19–$25 a month, the mid plan from $49–$65, Advanced from $299–$399, and Plus "from $2,300/mo" [2]. Plus is quote-based above that entry point, scaled to your volume. Transaction fees for third-party payment providers also drop by tier — 2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus [2] — which matters more the higher your revenue goes.
What do you actually get on Plus that Advanced doesn't have?
- Unlimited staff accounts instead of a capped number [1].
- Up to 9 expansion stores for other regions or brands under one contract [1].
- Deeper checkout customization via the Checkout Branding API and checkout UI extensions, plus custom B2B and D2C checkout flows [1].
- Shopify Functions in custom apps — only Plus stores can use custom apps that contain Function APIs to change discounts, shipping, payment options, and checkout validation [3].
- Higher API rate limits and exclusive APIs like Multipass for single sign-on [1].
- Launchpad and priority 24/7 support for scheduled sales events and faster help [1].
What's the deal with checkout customization?
Historically, Plus stores could edit the checkout directly through a file called checkout.liquid. Shopify deprecated that approach — the deadline to move off it was August 28, 2025 — and replaced it with checkout extensibility: UI extensions, the branding API, web pixels, and Functions [4]. The upshot: real checkout customization is still a Plus capability, but it now happens through supported extension points rather than raw template edits, which is more stable and upgrade-safe.
Do I need Plus for B2B or wholesale?
For serious B2B, effectively yes. Plus includes B2B on Shopify with company profiles, multiple catalogs and price lists, deposit and partial-payment rules, and separate wholesale checkout flows [1]. Standard plans can approximate wholesale with discount codes, a separate store, or an app, but if you have many trade accounts with negotiated pricing and payment terms, the native B2B tooling on Plus is the reason to upgrade.
When is revenue a reason to upgrade?
There is no official revenue threshold — Shopify prices Plus by negotiation. In practice, the maths starts to favour Plus when your third-party payment volume is high enough that the fee difference (0.6% on Advanced versus 0.2% on Plus [2]) offsets a chunk of the price jump, and when a checkout or automation limit is actively costing you sales. If revenue is growing but nothing is broken, growth alone is not the signal — a specific blocked capability is.
When is Plus not worth it?
- You want a "nicer" checkout, not a functionally different one. Theme and content tweaks don't require Plus.
- Wholesale is a handful of accounts. Discount codes or a second store cover it.
- You're chasing a feature one app already solves. Check the App Store first — many public apps use Functions on any plan [3].
- Your real problem is conversion. If the store isn't converting, a plan upgrade won't fix it — see the quiet leaks.
Can I get most of the benefit without upgrading?
Often, yes. Public apps that contain Functions run on any plan [3], the standard checkout is already extensible for branding and content, and most conversion gains come from speed, clarity, trust signals, and reducing checkout friction — the same things Baymard's cart-abandonment research points to, where extra costs, forced account creation, and a long checkout are top addressable reasons buyers leave (average abandonment sits around 70%) [5]. Exhaust those before you pay for Plus.
What about multiple stores and selling internationally?
Plus includes up to 9 expansion stores [1] and markets itself on activating 150+ countries from one organisation [6]. If you are running one brand in one market, standard Shopify already supports multiple currencies and markets. Expansion stores earn their keep when you genuinely need separate storefronts — distinct brands, region-specific catalogues, or a separate B2B store — managed centrally.
How hard is the migration from a lower plan?
Lighter than a platform migration, because it is the same platform — your products, orders, customers, and theme carry over. The work is in the new capabilities: rebuilding any checkout customization on the modern extensibility model [4], setting up B2B companies and catalogs, wiring Functions, and configuring expansion stores. Budget it as a focused project, not a switch-flip, and have a developer scope it against what you actually plan to use.
How do I decide?
Write down the specific thing you cannot do today and confirm it is genuinely Plus-only and not solved by an app or a theme change. If it is real — bespoke checkout logic, native B2B at scale, Functions in a custom app, several storefronts — Plus is the clean answer. If you cannot name that blocker, stay where you are and invest in store optimisation instead. Still unsure how to size the platform to the business? Send us the blocker and we will tell you straight.
